All about Sheffield
As one of the main towns and cities serviced by Sub Zero Climate Control we thought we’d post an article all about Sheffield. Known as the “Steel City” Sheffield nestles in the magnificent surroundings of South Yorkshire.
Sheffield has never been a city to take things quietly and has generated a lot of interest since it was established back in the 8th century. Sheffield is known mainly for its industrial contribution as a large-scale steel manufacturing city.
However, Sheffield has many other accolades in accordance with its excellence in industry. For example, Sheffield Football Club was the very first football club to be established in the United Kingdom.
The city boasts stunning views, winter gardens and wonderful architecture, a legacy to the wealth of the steel age. Visitors will be charmed and fascinated by this multi-faceted city.
Contemporary music icons Def Leppard and the Artic Monkeys started their journey to stardom from here and there is a thriving gig scene. Sheffield is also renowned as the greenest city in England despite is heavy industry of old. There are no less than two hundred parks, woodlands, and gardens for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. There are walking trails that meander through the award winning Peace Gardens in the city centre set against the backdrop of fountains and the magnificent Victorian architecture of the Town Hall.
In 1836, the Botanical Gardens were founded that rival any with stunning glass pavilions and plant collections set against enormous trees from many places. The Winter Garden is the place all visitors should see whether keen gardeners or just beauty lovers. The Winter Garden is home to the largest temperate glasshouse in a city centre in the whole of Europe. Consequently, there are almost 2500 plants belonging to over 150 different plant species easily accessible in the centre of the city. Architectural buffs will appreciate the sheer artistry of the Winter Gardens. There is also a gallery to explore, plant shop and café for that all important cup of tea and snack.
If history is your thing, there are museums encompassing different facets of Sheffield’s progress down through the years to the present day. Whatever, your interest you will find a museum that captures your imagination. Try the Kelham Island museum and Weston Park museum of which the city is extremely proud along with some other specialist museums such as the Traditional Heritage museum and the Turner museum of Glass
