Air Conditioning Filters
The air conditioning filter is one of the most important parts in an air conditioning system. Without the filter, the air conditioning system would be dirty and the air circulated would be filled with pollutants. All parts of an air conditioning system from the ductwork to the air conditioning refrigerant, need the air conditioning filter to be clean and replaced regularly to ensure the system is performing optimally and the air is of the highest quality.
If an air conditioning filters are left dirty and for too long before replacement, it can lead to system inefficiencies and higher energy costs. The air conditioning filter should be changed every month to two months for home air conditioning systems and every couple of weeks for certain commercial or industrial air conditioning where usage is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Making this part of your monthly home or building maintenance chores will ensure the air is kept at a very high quality for the comfort of the users in the building or home.
There are a wide variety of air conditioning filters from many different brand names. They can vary in how often they need replacing but you can judge the efficiency of the filter by Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings. This measures how efficient an air conditioning filter is on a scale of 1 to 12. The higher the rating, the more effective the filter is at removing particles from the air such as dander, pollen, dust, mould and other allergens.
Air conditioning filters are either disposable or fixed. The fixed variety needs regular cleaning and the disposable ones can be discarded and replaced with a new filter when necessary.
Conventional and pleated fibreglass disposable filters (1″ and 2″) are most common in homes and small industrial and commercial air conditioners. Electrostatic filters are commonly advertised as allergy free as when the air moves through the filter, it creates a static charge that collects any dust in the filter. Electronic filters are connected to an electrical power source and usually wall mounted. Electronic filters come with a pre-filter that can collect larger particles and only need to be cleaned every six months. Carbon filters contain carbon that can control any odour problems you might have within the air conditioning system and are useful for homes where pets are kept.
It is important to use the air conditioning filter that is recommended for the particular model of air conditioner where it is being replaced. If it is not quite right, the system will not be as efficient and may cause issues.
Air conditioning filter installation is something that needs careful attention. The air conditioning filter should fit tightly. A perfect seal is necessary to prevent unfiltered air from entering and damaging the air conditioning system. Without a perfect seal and proper sizing, the filter will not work properly.
